A fuller picture at one glance

A budget-friendly team that empowers individuals with slow-fashioned, customisable, sustainability-driven handcrafted products that preserve the handcrafting tradition.

To empower every individual to take pride in owning locally made, handcrafted goods. One day, you’ll have the power to say, “I know who made this and where the materials are from.”

"There is a piece of flesh in the body. If it is healthy, the whole body is healthy, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily, it is the heart."

Handcrafted goods are great, but they are better when handcrafted with sincerity.

Who Are We?

Introduction into our world as we see it—a speck of spectacle through our spectacles

We're a speck of dust in this entire universe—or so we believe—but that doesn’t stop us from turning what our hands touch into a spectacle. Wait, no. Don’t listen to what we have to say; look at what our hands can do because we believe that anyone can spill borrowed words, but not everyone can move hearts with their hands.

We strive to do this by handcrafting slow-fashion, personalised leather goods for individuals and brands.

Our Services and Daily Grind

We work with by-products of the meat industry, handcrafting purposeful bespoke and personalised leather goods and aprons for individuals (locally and internationally), manufacturing corporate gifts for businesses of any scale, handcrafting branded wares for restaurants, teaching leather crafting workshops for beginners, enabling customisable options for our goods via an e-commerce platform, and encouraging local makers to preserve the handcrafting tradition.

Founder & History

A Budding Surgeon from St. John’s Island

Addynna’s original ambition was to become a surgeon or a veterinarian, as she grew up in St. John’s Island exposed to DIY-ed items made by her late grandfather. She was overwhelmingly curious about how machines work and how human bodies function differently, and it lured her further into the idea of becoming a surgeon who dissects, assembles, and sees things happening inside a body. Today, she lives with the same curiosity and stitches animal skin instead.

The name “Forest Child” came about when Addynna believed that she was a child of the forest. Her attachment to the wilderness and hunting skills with catapults and spears on St.John’s Island inspired this label, which eventually became the source of her rice bowl.

Forest Child was founded in Singapore in 2012, when Addynna decided to handcraft leather goods with the detailed specifications she needed, as there were none available on retail shelves that suited her preferences. Over time, friends, families, and strangers started purchasing the designs Addynna initially created for her personal use, and the adventure soon grew into a company that highlighted its key service and focused on customising leather goods and aprons for the local market.

Our Focus–A Decade Into Crafting

Material Focus and Importance

Quality goods speak for themselves, so material choices and workmanship are some of the determining factors as to whether a handcrafted product is durable or otherwise. We focus on high-quality vegetable-tanned leather, which is processed in one of the world’s best tanneries in Tuscany, Italy.

Our leather supplier, Consorzio Vera Pelle, works with only by-products of the meat industry. No animal was killed for its skin, and we believe that these by-products are better used than piled and burnt in landfills.

It’s important to know where your materials are from, and we're proud to be a part of a promising ecosystem for a more sustainable future that connects people, environmental goals, shared history, economy, and geographical backgrounds together.

A Decade into Leather Crafting

10 years ago, there were no leathercrafting courses. Material supplies were scarce, and hardly any YouTube tutorials were readily available. The crafting journey was mostly made up of trial and error, steep learning curves, and a lot of time.

Even today, there’s always something new to learn from, and our desire to improve at every step of the process lingers in every craft or large project, especially with regards to upgrading our skills or improving the time taken from the beginning to the finishing stages of a product.

Leather, Patina & Others

Leather vs. Other Materials

Leathercrafting is not a career; it’s our lifestyle, and we’re lucky to wake up and be able to earn from what we love doing. The use of leather existed in ancient times, exists today, and will continue to exist in the future. We’re bringing a part of ancient history with us in this modern age every step of the way—an invaluable gift.

The natural phenomenon here is that leather ages with you. There’s a patina layer that develops when the sweat from your palm comes into contact with leather. Over time, the leather goods you own will tell a story based on the marks on their surface, how they darken over time, how well they were taken care of, what they went through, and a glimpse of their battle scars.

As for the type of leather we’re using, we take pride in using vegetable-tanned leather; these leather skins are processed in the tannery using tanning agents (called tannins) derived from tree barks, leaves, and roots, hence the term "vegetable-tanned." This gives the leather colour and texture, preserves its strength, and prolongs its durability.

The art of leathercraft lies in its fluidity. Its versatility creates endless possibilities in the name of art itself. Leather is a medium we use that sparks our creativity, as it can be cut, stitched, layered to create form, painted on, carved, and sculpted by baking.

We think these are very unique characteristics compared to other materials.

What's Vegan Leather?

A Deeper Look: Is leather cruel? Is vegan leather better?

This is a great opportunity for us to share that, unfortunately, vegan leather does not exist.

Leather itself is a by-product of the meat industry, and the term "leather" is only used when it’s taken from an animal.

"Vegan leather" itself is incorrectly marketed online; most crafters are using plant-based skin, and this skin is added with other materials to become a type of fabric, e.g., "Apple Leather," "Mango Leather," "Pineapple Leather," and "Mushroom Leather.”

One of the good examples we have previously tested and used for a bespoke order is pineapple fabric (not to be termed pineapple leather). This pineapple fabric was derived from waste pineapple husks (a byproduct from a large pineapple farm), and it’s the best alternative we can get while we escape from all the polyester-infused plastic drama. This was also an experiment we used to educate our vegan followers who were once against the use of leather, then remained vegan and started supporting our reasons for using leather.

We have photos of these gold-zipped pouches as a final product, but none of these alternatives can beat the natural phenomenon of leather and its versatility.

The Team

Local Hands on Deck

Once, we were struck by news of the needy and international crafters who needed jobs. From this event, we deeply reflected on the impact we could make in lives through our work. Although becoming passionate about helping others from a different community stood as a beautiful purpose, we were more rooted to shift our focus to empower skilled local crafters and our immediate neighbours on the soil where our feet stand. Hence, all products from our studio are handcrafted locally by locals in Singapore.

Slow Fashion: Us, You, Now.

Slow Fashion in a Fast Age of Impatient Consumers

In a world of constant changes and fashion trends, we want to be the constant, and we want to live in our own world where time revolves around timelessness—leather is all about that.

Large manufacturing companies commercially dilute the art form of leather crafting. These giants produce low-quality leather goods on a large scale and market them as high-quality leather goods that fit their mass appeal.

Therein lies our endless pursuit of dedication to educate and make a difference, one mind and one day at a time. As we remember to live by 3-day periods, the days that exist are only yesterday, today, and tomorrow, and our challenges in this journey become more bearable.

We’re optimistic about slow fashion and committed to embarking on a more sustainable journey, so small steps are important. Our top priority remains producing handcrafted goods that are made-to-order.

In a fast age like this, we hope to see the day when more local consumers can see the effect of having patience in waiting for handcrafted goods that were made solely for them. It’s a whole new ballgame of patience and anticipation, trust and excitement, visualisation, and pride in local craftsmanship.

Forest Child: You Have a New Message

Our Burning Message and a Cooling Sensation

Through the impact of our work, we truly hope that one day our consumers will have the power to say, “I know who made this and where the materials are from. I can return this to the maker for any repairs or upcycle it when the time is right. I can bury this bag because this vegetable-tanned leather is biodegradable.

I could have chosen convenience and bought a bag off the shelf for immediate gratification, but I chose delayed gratification. I chose this. I will always choose this.”

To start a return, you can contact us at create@forestchild.org. Please note that returns will need to be sent to the following address: Synergy@KB, 23 Kaki Bukit Road 4, #01-19 (level 3) Singapore 417800

If your return is accepted, we’ll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.

You can always contact us for any return question at create@forestchild.org.

Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.

Certain types of items cannot be returned, like perishable goods (such as food, flowers, or plants), custom products (such as special orders or personalized items), and personal care goods (such as beauty products). We also do not accept returns for hazardous materials, flammable liquids, or gases. Please get in touch if you have questions or concerns about your specific item.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.

The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

Notwithstanding the above, if the merchandise is being shipped into the European Union, you have the right to cancel or return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification. As above, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.

We do not process refunds. Please refer to Exchange Terms & Conditions or contact us at create@forestchild.org.
